The Hermitage is a Grade II listed building at 42 Acres, a well-being retreat situated in Witham Friary, Somerset.

At its core, 42 Acres invites people to reconnect with nature, self and others but has now grown to offer so much more including a range of wellbeing and nature-based experiences and events, a biodynamic farm, and an abundant nature reserve.

The team at AB Conduit Building LTD have been part of an ongoing programme over several years to transform the different areas on site into the wonderful sanctuary that it has become today, using large volumes of our oak in the process.

This multi-phase project included working on the original 15th century hunting lodge to transform it into a unique high-end hotel, The Hermitage, which includes hand-crafted bespoke joinery in each room, along with a stunning oak frame conservatory.

Combining expert craftsmanship and an emphasis on using sustainable building methods, along with ensuring that conservation of the lodge was at the heart of the project, meant that refurbishment exceeded the clients’ expectations and is now enjoyed by many guests each year.

Andy from AB Conduit Building LTD says, "This was an extremely challenging building with an age range of adaptions and changes spanning hundreds of years.  Over a period of two years, we carried out a vast array of conservation repairs, structural repairs and new addition work to this large, beautiful building.

I have used Hewins Oak over several years and their quality oak timber was used throughout the project from replacement wall plates to bathroom cabinetry and a large oak frame conservatory.

They have also been a pleasure to deal with and I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up the phone the next time I require an oak for a project."
